Dog Seizure Log
What should you do when your dog has a seizure? Time it, keep your dog from falling or hitting things, keep your hands away from the mouth, and video it if you safely can, as VCA and Cornell advise. A seizure lasting more than 5 minutes, or a second one before your dog recovers, is an emergency. Afterwards, a detailed seizure diary is one of the most useful things you can give your vet, according to the International Veterinary Epilepsy Task Force. This one-page log covers what to do, when to act, and a log for each seizure.
Fillable · bilingual EN/ES · vet-sourced, not a scanned template.

- When is a dog seizure an emergency?
- Cornell advises going to a clinic immediately if a seizure lasts more than 5 minutes, even if it stops on the way. The International Veterinary Epilepsy Task Force also treats two or more seizures without full recovery in between as an emergency.
- Can a dog swallow its tongue during a seizure?
- No. VCA says dogs don’t swallow their tongues, and putting your fingers in the mouth risks a bad bite. Move furniture away and keep your dog from falling instead.
- What counts as cluster seizures?
- The International Veterinary Epilepsy Task Force defines cluster seizures as two or more within 24 hours. Call your vet the same day if that happens.
- Can I stop my dog’s seizure medication if they’ve been fine?
- Not on your own. VCA and the International Veterinary Epilepsy Task Force warn that stopping suddenly can trigger seizures; any change should be a slow taper planned with your vet.
