Counter-Surfing Prevention Checklist

How do you stop a dog from stealing food off the counter? Mostly by making sure the counter never pays: clear counters, food stored away, the dog behind a gate or on its bed while you cook. The American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior calls clearing the counters the easiest and most effective step, and scolding after the fact doesn’t work because the food already rewarded the dog. This one-page checklist adds “place” and “leave it” training, the stolen foods that mean an immediate call to your vet or a poison line, and a practice log.

What's inside

  • Six management habits that do most of the work
  • Training in 5–10 minutes a day: “place” and a “leave it” ladder
  • If your dog stole these, call: three columns of dangerous foods, from xylitol to cooked bones
  • The two 24/7 poison-line numbers and a practice log

How to use it

  1. Agree the management rules with everyone in the house, then put the sheet on the fridge.
  2. Practise “place” and “leave it” for 5–10 minutes a day and log the sessions.
  3. Send your dog to its place with a food toy every time you cook.
  4. If your dog ever eats something from the danger columns, call your vet or a poison line straight away.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my dog keep counter surfing?
Because it works. The AKC explains that even small bits of food build the habit, and AVSAB notes that an occasional success keeps a dog searching. A counter that never pays off lets the habit fade.
Should I scold my dog when I catch them?
Not after the fact: the food already rewarded the dog, so scolding teaches little. The AKC adds that punishment can increase anxiety or make dogs sneakier. Prevent access and reward the behavior you want instead.
How long does training take?
AVSAB suggests 5–10 minutes of “leave it” practice a day over weeks, and the AKC says many dogs improve within weeks when the whole household keeps the rules.
My dog stole something dangerous. What do I do?
Call your vet or a 24/7 poison line right away: ASPCA Animal Poison Control 888-426-4435 or Pet Poison Helpline 855-764-7661 (a fee may apply). Xylitol can drop blood sugar within 10–60 minutes, according to the FDA, so don’t wait for signs.
