Puppy Crate Training Schedule

How long can a puppy stay in a crate? Less than most people think. A common rule of thumb from VCA is about one hour per month of age between potty breaks; the AKC uses months of age plus one. Both are maximums, and Humane World for Animals advises no more than 3–4 hours at a stretch in the crate for puppies under 6 months. This one-page schedule puts both rules in a table by age, walks you through a gentle six-step crate introduction, lists the moments to take your puppy out, and gives you a daily crate and potty log.

How to use it

  1. Start at step 1 even if your puppy already tolerates the crate; it builds a calm habit.
  2. Use the stricter column of the table while you learn your puppy’s signals.
  3. Log each crate stretch and potty trip for a week; patterns show you when to go out.
  4. If whining starts, go back a step and shorten the time.

Frequently asked questions

How long can a puppy hold it?
As a maximum, VCA suggests about one hour per month of age (a 3-month-old, about 3 hours) and the AKC uses months plus one (about 4 hours). At 6–8 weeks, VCA advises taking puppies out at least every 2 hours, even overnight.
How long does crate training take?
VCA says most puppies accept the crate within 1–2 months, and are comfortable in it all night by about 6 months. Going slowly early on usually makes the whole process faster.
My puppy cries in the crate. What do I do?
Humane World for Animals says whining to get out usually means the time was lengthened too fast: go back a step. Make night trips brief and calm with no play, and call your vet if your puppy drools, cries constantly, tries to escape or can’t settle.
Can I use the crate for time-outs?
No. VCA and Humane World for Animals both say never to use the crate as punishment. It should stay a place your puppy chooses to go.
