Dog Body Condition Score Chart
Is my dog overweight? Use a body condition score, not just the scale. On the 9-point scale used by VCA and the Merck Veterinary Manual, 4–5 is ideal: ribs easily felt under a thin layer of fat, with a visible waist and tummy tuck. Scores of 6–7 are overweight and 8–9 obese. This one-page chart describes each score, explains the simple hand test, reminds you to check muscle as well as fat, and gives you a monthly log for weight, score and notes.
Fillable · bilingual EN/ES · vet-sourced, not a scanned template.

- What is the ideal body condition score for a dog?
- 4–5 on the 9-point scale, according to the Merck Veterinary Manual and VCA. Always note which scale your vet uses, since some use a 5-point scale.
- How can I tell if my dog is overweight at home?
- VCA describes a hand test: if your dog’s ribs feel like the back of your hand, that is about right; like your knuckles, too thin; like your palm, too heavy.
- Does a little extra weight really matter?
- It can. In a lifelong study published in JAVMA in 2002, Labradors fed 25% less lived significantly longer and developed chronic disease later. VCA notes that being moderately overweight can shorten life expectancy by nearly two years.
- How common is dog obesity?
- The Association for Pet Obesity Prevention’s 2022 survey found 59% of US dogs were overweight or obese. VCA defines overweight as 10–20% above ideal weight and obese as more than 20%.
