How much should I feed my dog?

Vets work it out in two steps. First, the Resting Energy Requirement (RER) — what a dog burns just existing: RER = 70 × (weight in kg)0.75. Then the day’s calories are RER × a life-stage or activity factor — about 1.6 for a typical spayed/neutered adult, 1.8 for an intact one, 1.2–1.4 for a couch-potato or senior, 2–3 for active and working dogs, and 2–3 for growing puppies. To turn calories into a bowl, divide by your food’s energy (the “kcal per cup” or “kcal per kg” printed on the bag).

The daily-calorie factors

A starting point, not a rule

These numbers are a starting ration, then you adjust to the dog in front of you. An individual dog’s real need can vary by roughly ±50% with metabolism, breed, coat and true activity, so the single most important gauge is body condition: aim for a 4–5 on the 9-point score — ribs easily felt, a visible waist, a tucked belly. If your dog is gaining, feed a little less; if it’s ribby, feed a little more. Growth, pregnancy, weight loss and any illness change the math and should be guided by your vet.

How is the calorie estimate calculated?
In two steps, the way vets do it. First the Resting Energy Requirement: RER = 70 × (body weight in kg)^0.75 — the calories a dog burns at rest. Then daily calories = RER × a life-stage or activity factor (about 1.6 for a typical neutered adult, 1.8 intact, 1.2–1.4 for a weight-prone or senior dog, 2–3 for active and working dogs, 2–3 for growing puppies). Cups or grams — which is more accurate?
Grams, on a kitchen scale. Every bag lists its energy as “metabolizable energy” (kcal per cup or per kg); dividing your dog’s daily calories by that gives the portion. A measuring cup is fine, but eyeballing “a scoop” is the single most common cause of overfeeding — weighing the food is the reliable way.
My dog needs to lose weight — what do I enter?
Enter your dog’s ideal / target weight, not its current weight, and pick the weight-loss profile. Feed to roughly the ideal-weight resting need and aim to lose no more than about 1–2% of body weight per week. Weight-loss plans should always be vet-supervised to rule out medical causes and keep it safe.
How do treats fit in?
Treats, chews, dental sticks and table scraps should be no more than 10% of the day’s calories (AAHA and WSAVA). Subtract that 10% from the meal allowance rather than adding it on top, so the day still totals the target — treats on top are how weight creeps up.
