How Long Can a Puppy Hold Its Pee?

Two simple rules give you the numbers: about an hour for every month of age, and never more than months plus one. Here's the chart, plus the moments your puppy needs to go out whatever the clock says.

A puppy can hold its pee for about one hour per month of age, according to Humane World for Animals, and the AKC puts the most you should ask at the puppy’s age in months plus one. So a 3-month-old can manage about 3 hours, and 4 at most. Many puppies need breaks more often than that, so treat these numbers as limits, not targets.

The chart by age

3 months3 hours4 hours
4 months4 hours5 hours
5 months5 hours6 hours
6 months6 hours7 hours

The two rules don’t fully agree, so use the first column as your plan and the second as a ceiling. While your puppy is awake, Humane World advises a trip out at least every two hours anyway. The free puppy potty schedule by age prints this chart with a day plan to fill in.

When to go out, whatever the clock says

The AKC and Humane World list the moments a puppy is most likely to need to go:

  • First thing in the morning, straight from the crate.
  • Right after waking from any nap.
  • 5 to 30 minutes after a meal (AKC).
  • Soon after a drink of water.
  • During and after play.
  • Last thing before bed.

Humane World also recommends a consistent feeding schedule and taking the water away about two and a half hours before bedtime. More on the routine: how to potty train a puppy.

Crates and nights

Ohio State’s Indoor Pet Initiative says never to confine a puppy longer than it can realistically hold its urine and feces, and the chart is your best guide to that. A 2- or 3-month-old’s ceiling of 3 or 4 hours is shorter than most nights, so plan a night-time trip. The AKC says a puppy that whines in the crate overnight most likely needs the bathroom (why dogs whine in the crate). The crate size calculator helps you choose a crate that fits.

How long house-training takes

Humane World says house-training typically takes four to six months, and the AKC says a puppy whose training started early is usually dependable most of the time by about six months. Accidents along the way are normal, and both sources say never to punish them. Take your puppy calmly to the potty spot, praise the moment it finishes outside (Humane World), and clean the indoor spot thoroughly so the smell doesn’t draw it back.

When to call the vet

If your puppy suddenly needs to go far more often than the chart suggests, or starts having accidents after being reliable, talk to your vet. The AKC advises ruling out urinary tract infections and bladder stones, and says persistent or unusual urination needs a vet.

Frequently asked questions

How long can an 8-week-old puppy hold its pee?
At 8 weeks a puppy is about 2 months old, so plan on about 2 hours, the Humane World for Animals rule of one hour per month of age, and never more than 3 hours, the AKC's months-plus-one maximum. Many puppies this young need to go out more often.
Can a puppy hold its pee all night?
Not at first. By the AKC's months-plus-one rule, a 2-month-old's ceiling is 3 hours and a 3-month-old's is 4, which is shorter than most nights. Plan a night-time potty trip, and keep in mind the AKC's advice that a puppy whining in the crate overnight most likely needs the bathroom.
How long does it take to potty train a puppy?
Humane World for Animals says house-training typically takes four to six months. The AKC says a puppy whose training started early is usually dependable most of the time by about six months. Expect accidents along the way, and never punish them.
Should I take my puppy's water away at night?
Humane World for Animals suggests removing water about two and a half hours before bedtime, along with keeping meals on a consistent schedule. Then take your puppy out last thing before bed, as both the AKC and Humane World recommend.
