Puppy Potty Schedule by Age
How long can a puppy hold its pee? Plan on about one hour for every month of age, as Humane World for Animals puts it, and treat the AKC’s rule of months plus one as the most to ask: a three-month-old puppy can go about three hours, four at most. This one-page schedule shows those limits from two to six months, the moments to take your puppy out (after waking, eating, drinking and play, and last thing at night), and gives you a fillable day plan to set breaks before the need arrives.

- How long can a puppy hold its pee?
- About one hour for every month of age, according to Humane World for Animals. The AKC’s rule of months plus one sets the most you should ask: a three-month-old can comfortably hold it about three hours and four at most. Many puppies need breaks more often, so plan short and stretch slowly.
- How soon after eating does a puppy need to go out?
- Soon. The AKC suggests waiting only 5 to 30 minutes after a meal, and treating a drink of water the same way.
- How often should I take my puppy out?
- At least every two hours while your puppy is awake, according to Humane World for Animals, plus right after waking up, after play, after eating or drinking, and last thing before bed.
- How long does potty training a puppy take?
- Typically four to six months, says Humane World for Animals. The AKC notes that when training starts early, a six-month-old puppy can usually be depended on most of the time.
- Should I take my puppy’s water away at night?
- Humane World for Animals suggests removing the water dish about two and a half hours before bedtime, so your puppy has a chance to empty out before sleep. Keep water available the rest of the day.
- What should I do after an accident?
- Never punish it. Calmly take your puppy to the potty spot, praise the moment they finish outside, and clean the indoor spot thoroughly so the smell doesn’t draw them back. Then take your puppy out a little sooner next time.
